Brushing Habits to Break

A new year is here, and with that comes new resolutions! While there are many resolutions, we know some of you are planning to uphold, like eating healthier and exercising more often. Still, at Steier Dental Implants and Prosthodontics, we want to impart this resolution to you, learning to brush better. There are several bad brushing habits that we’ve noticed many of our patients carry, and we want to share some helpful tips that can help you better your brushing.

The first habit to break would be keeping your toothbrush for too long. We know that most people tend to stick with one toothbrush and swap it out for a new one every so year, but we recommend changing your toothbrush every three to four months. Frayed and broken bristles won’t keep your teeth clean for long, so make sure to replace your toothbrush when you see those visible signs. Be sure to find one with the ADA Seal of Acceptance as well. Next on the list is the topic of brushing. Most people tend to be quick when brushing their teeth, but we recommend brushing for a full two minutes, twice per day. If you find this difficult, try either setting a timer or distracting yourself by humming or listening to your favorite song. We’ve also seen many cases of people brushing too hard. Make sure to be gentle with your teeth, as it can cause damage your gums due to the added pressure you’re putting onto your teeth.

These are just a few examples of the many ways you can better your dental health this new year, and when it comes to assisting you in all things dental this new year, Steier Dental Implants and Prosthodontics has got you covered. Teeth Talk: More Brushing Habits to Break

We’re back with another informative blog on proper brushing techniques. Last time we went over a few ways you could better your brushing habits, and today, we’re returning to that topic and showing off some more ways you can better those habits.

Going back to the topic of the state of your toothbrush, be sure to keep it upright and let it air dry in the open. Keeping your just used toothbrush open in a closed container allows for germs to grow. Also, when it comes to purchasing a new toothbrush, always go for ones that have soft bristles. Be sure to be gentle with how you brush, especially where your gums and teeth meet. We’ve seen many patients use toothbrushes with stiff bristles that have sensitive gums when they come for a check-up. Above everything else, make sure to find a toothbrush that’s comfortable for you. Many people tend to be indecisive when it comes to which toothbrush to go with, so don’t be afraid to experiment with which toothbrush model best fits your preference. Whether it’s a power brush or a manual, no matter which model you use, a clean mouth is up to the brusher.
