What Are Crowns & Bridges?
A Crown is a dental restoration that covers a tooth with a new material, such as various plastics (only temporaries), metals, porcelain or New Zirconia and combination of materials. You can consult with your Prosthodontist & Dr Steier about best materials advantages and shortcomings of each material. A crown replaces the outer layer of enamel & part of the dentin layer and is contoured to be sized and have the same function of a perfectly natural tooth. A bridge, which is made of the same material as of a crown, is used to replace one or more missing teeth, using functioning teeth on both sides of the missing tooth. The crown is the best and most durable alternative to restoring a tooth with significant loss of tooth structure, if done right you may never know you have a crown on the tooth.
- Esthetically pleasing
- Protects the remaining tooth structure against fracture.
- Allows for mayor transformation to improve esthetics ( change shape of teeth, close gaps, elongate or shorten teeth as desired).
- Only if the crown or bridge not fitted correctly ( Leaking or unfitted)tooth can decay under the crown and eventually can be lost, this can be felt by bad breath, bad taste in your mouth and it has NOTHING to do with how much you clean or what you eat.
